BBC Transcripts 3D

D&AD New Blood Awards
Brief: BBC Sounds
Sounds are great. But if you lose your headphones - or your hearing - you’ve lost access to an entire world of BBC content.

BBC 3D Transcripts is a multi-sensory experience of BBC Sounds content for when you can’t listen. Auto-generated transcripts appear alongside the content, with optional programmed animations, so you can search, share and cite content freely. Sounds can be replicated either visually or through vibrations on your phone, allowing you to fully sense the direction, tone, rhythm and volume of content - allowing everyone to experience BBC Sounds.
2024 Exciting Update: When I made this project in 2019, it all seemed a little far-fetched and conceptual, but accessibility is important to me and using haptic vibration seemed like a great way to make sound more inclusive.
Turns out, Apple agrees.
In May 2024, Apple announced Music Haptics, part of the iOS Accessibility Update in which iPhone will play "taps, textures, and refined vibrations to the audio of the music" for hearing impaired users, to be rolled out in late 2024.
